Until the Real Thing Comes Along by Elizabeth Berg

Until the Real Thing Comes Along is by far the worst book I’ve read by Berg. It started out OK. It centers on a woman who admittedly tends to fixate on her first choice. She falls in love with her gay best friend and refuses to fall out of love with him. Meanwhile, she wants nothing more in life than to get married and have babies. OK, it’s not the most original plot in the world but it was moving along and the main character was drawn with Berg’s usual flair for revealing unique but telling thoughts.

But then they decide to have a baby together (you’ve seen the Will & Grace episode, right?) and the whole things descends into unmitigated cliche. Not even well done at that. At least Will & Grace is usually funny.
